CORNWALL PLATE FINAL
Caradon 2 – 3
Caradon 3 - 0
The Ladies County Plate Final was an all Caradon affair, with their 2nd team meeting their 3rd team for the first time competitively. The first 20 minutes was a closely fought contest, with the 2nd team having the majority of the possession but the 3rd team coming out on top with perfectly timed tackles and fast paced counter attacks. Their plan of taking the game to the 2s, tackling hard and closing them down to reduce time on the ball made the first half entertaining for the spectators.
It was in the last 10 minutes of the first half that saw Caradon 2’s finally settle into their passing game. A slip from Laura Hill to Vanessa Scott saw Scott drive at the goal, take it past the diving keeper and slot it in on her reverse.
The 1-0 lead at half time was the confidence boost the 2nd team needed and they started the second half with determination to increase their lead, meanwhile the 3s team talk was a belief they could get back on the game as the whistle started the last 35 minutes.
With some feisty play between 3’s Kirsty Merrin and 2s defender Rachel Spender, the determination was there from both sides to keep this plate final alive. Despite some great defending from 3s line up Emma Gliddon, Nicola Batten, Amber Jeffery and Sharon Jeffery it was a quick free hit from defender Claire Brown cut through the middle of the pitch to find Saffy Cripps, who dodged her defender and fed player of the match Scott, who calmly put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0. Special mention must go to Emily Joyce in goal for the 3s who made some incredible saves to prevent the scoreline being higher.
The 3rd team had a couple of quick breaks but the 2’s defence stood strong, playing some excellent passes around the back to switch the play and mount a counter attack. The 3rd and final goal was scored by Erryn Lockett, who was perfectly placed to pounce on a loose ball in front of goal and bundle it over the line. The 2nd team finished the game worthy winners and grateful to have played against their friends and teammates in such a well spirited match.
They will face each other once again on 24th October in the first league game of the season.
