Still finding their feet in the new league, there has been lots of development and the points will start to come. Currently sitting at 11th in the league.
The ladie's 2nd team have had the strongest start of all of our senior teams with 4 wins from 4 games. This very motivated squad of players are sitting at the top of their league with a strong goal difference.
The ladie's 3rd team are doing well in the same league, with 1 win and 3 losses so far they are sitting comfortably at 6th in the league.
The ladie's 4th team have 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss under their belts which currently sits them 4th place in their league.

A good first few weeks all in all for the senior squads of the club.

The juniors have also started very strong: the U12 boys recently visited Truro school for their county tournament and won 4 out of their 5 games! Prior to that the U14 girls were in Penzance showcasing some excellent hockey, although coming away with 1 draw and 3 losses the progressive performances and goals that were scored made the day worth it. The U10's team were in Penzance on the same day and remained unbeaten with 5 wins and 1 draw! The U12 girls first tournament was at home at Lux Park in some dodgy weather conditions but again they showed great spirit and displayed some great hockey. The U16 girls did well in their first county tournament in Penzance taking on two experienced sides in Falmouth and Penzance and once again showcasing some excellent hockey and promise for the future.

The commitment and progression of our juniors is always something that the club is proud of and we look forward to all of these individuals developing through the ranks all the way through to senior hockey!

Photo: Glen Rogers
Molly Walsh Mon, 23 Oct 2023 10:00:20 +0100 http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/202324_season_so_far http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/202324_season_so_far CARADON LADIES FIRST XI WIN ENGLAND HOCKEY TEAM OF THE YEAR
Caradon Hockey Club added another trophy to their cabinet when the ladies first XI picked up the national award of “Women’s Team of the Year" at a star-studded ceremony at Leicester Athena on Saturday night. A huge achievement from the Liskeard based team that is reward for all their hard work, dedication, and achievements this season.

Shortlisted amongst five teams, Repton 1st XI, Blueharts 1st XI, Shipston on Stour, and Norton 1st XI who had all had remarkably successful seasons both on and off the pitch, nine squad members from Caradon travelled to Leicester more in hope than expectation of coming home with the prize.

This category was the twelfth of fourteen awards presented on the night, so it was a very nervy wait for the team, so when GB and England defender, Giselle Ainsley, opened the envelop and announced Caradon as the winners it was met with disbelief and huge excitement. The team made their way to the stage to collect their award, jubilant to achieve the highest of accolades from the sport’s governing body.

Caradon Women’s 1st XI have had a remarkable season by gaining back-to-back promotions, progressing from West Division 2 South to West Division 1 South and now for the 2023-24 season about to step into the West Premier League.
This season they won the West League Division 1 South winning 17 games, drawing 2 and only losing 3 matches. They achieved a total of 53 points, scoring 88 goals and only conceding 28 – an incredible tally considering this was their first time in playing in this league.

What makes this such an achievement is that it is the same core squad of 13 players who gained promotion from the previous year. The team consists of real club players who have played from the conception of the club in 2007. It also contains 6 players who have worked their way up from the clubs U10 section; 3 of them were playing for the Clubs 4th XI only 4 years ago playing in the bottom league of the West pyramid.

The team has a real family feel as it contains 2 sisters, 2 cousins and an aunt and niece with the team ranging in age from 17 to 47 – all-in-all a great mix of youth and experience!
Being a relatively small squad, they have showed unwavering commitment to both matches and weekly training nights, determined to follow the teams’ ethos of being ‘the best you can be’.
When not on the pitch, three of the teams’ members are volunteer junior coaches, helping to continue the pathway for young players within the club, whilst a further three hold club committee roles ensuring that the future of the club can be progressed in the right manner. It has been such a brilliant season from an exceptional group of individuals.

Caradon Hockey Club are very proud of the teams’ achievements over the years, and this really is the cherry on top of the cake. Seeing Caradon Hockey Club in lights, on the biggest stage, is testament to all the hard work by the clubs past and present committee members, players, officials and volunteers over the years and to be named as Women’s Team of the Year – well it just doesn’t get better than that!

Caradon HC will use this latest achievement to continue to inspire its junior and senior members in an environment where hockey is fun and for everyone regardless of age, gender, or ability. If you are interested in joining this family friendly and successful club, please contact them via the contact form on the Caradon Hockey Club website, email address: caradonhockey@gmail.com or contact them through any of their social media channels.

Molly Walsh Wed, 23 Aug 2023 19:56:17 +0100 http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/l1_win_team_of_the_year_ http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/l1_win_team_of_the_year_ 2022/23 End of Season Celebrations
Caradon Hockey Club 2022/2023 Season

Caradon Hockey Club visited St Mellion International Resort to celebrate the successes of their 2022/23 season. With Caradon 2s the first game up at 10am, the team were in high spirits but determined to bring home the silverware.

Caradon started well putting pressure on the Newquay defence, despite playing each other twice already in Trelawney 1 and Caradon winning both games, finals day is always a different feel and with the crew shouting and cheering from the bank they were unlucky not to get an early goal.

It was a normal line up but with some players suffering from injuries and recovering from illness, subs were used clinically to keep up the pace and push for that elusive first strike. The forward two of Katie Fear and Laura Hill were using quick passing and stick skills to dent the defensive line, with support from the midfield of Lauren Gouge, Natalie Ridgers, Carina Hodge, Helen Manley and Kirsty Merrin backing them up with quick responses and neat passing.

The hard work finally paid off when Laura Hill was right place, right time to slot home the goal Caradon had deserved, much to the delight of the team and the support.

The gears went up in the second half, both teams took a lot from the break and the refreshment stop put the game into another level with a more balanced end to end match. Neither team were ready to fold or give up, Caradon could have easily ‘parked the bus’ and just defended out their lead, but this is never really how Caradon play and they wanted to get another goal to get that buffer needed to relax a little.

Newquay were throwing everything at Caradon now, midfielders were tracking back and the backline who have been stellar this season – Rachael Spencer, Marcia Burgess, Captain Claire Brown, Nicole Harding with Neve Hunn infront and Lynn Oxenham between the sticks, strong saves were made and positive clearances pushed Caradon on.

With 5 minutes left on the clock and the impending penalty shuffles if Newquay were to score and end the game on a draw, they took their keeper off and swapped for an extra outfield player. Despite the added mind games of this decision, Caradon kept to their game plan and team structure almost getting that second goal with Hill again pouncing on a loose ball only to be gallantly saved off the line by a determined Newquay defender much to the relief of their team and support.

At last the final whistle blew and although it wasn’t the most pretty game of hockey Caradon had played this season, they got the job done and held on to their lead in a strong and confident manner topping off a fantastic couple of months of hockey. Welcoming the summer break, the team will be looking forward to the league return in September and a push for promotion as well as aiming to retain the Cornwall Plate for another year.

CORNWALL CUP FINAL
Caradon Ladies 1: 3
Falmouth 1: 3
(Falmouth win 5-4 on penalties)

Caradon put on the performance of their season in the county cup game against premiership team Falmouth, and were very unlucky to lose on penalty shuffles after the game finished 3-3.

After a successful league campaign where Caradon were undefeated winners of Division 2, they were definitely the underdogs but with confidence high and an electric atmosphere created by the travelling supporters they knew they had a chance.

Caradon had a brilliant start, winning several penalty corners in the first 5 minutes, but as Falmouth settled it was the favourites who took the lead. The pacey left wing was creating all kinds of problems for Caradons defence and it was from her good work that Falmouth found themselves 2-0 up. Caradon could have imploded at this point as coming from behind is not what they have been used to this season. Emma Gliddon was switched to right back and her pace and tenacity snuffed out Falmouths danger player. Molly Walsh and Beth Harris were in control of the centre of the pitch and with Claire Mitchell linking well with the forwards, Caradon were enjoying the majority of play. With minutes to play before the half time whistle, Bizzie Dinnis deflected home a penalty corner to get Caradon back in the game.

With a focused and positive team talk, Caradon came our determined in the second half. They were playing the better hockey and limiting Falmouth to half chances which were easily dealt with by defenders Ju Eldridge, Lucie Kay and Daisy Hunn.
Caradon got their deserved equaliser after good work from Saffy Barriball- Cripps and Ellen Spencer on the left, a great run from Libby Walsh was found and she smartly smashed it home beyond the helpless keeper. The game was now end to end, with both teams playing great attacking hockey. The only thing to spoil the spectacle of hockey was a rather strange decision by the umpire to award a penalty flick to Falmouth for an unseen foul in the circle. Both teams and spectators alike where bemused but Falmouth converted to give them a 3-2 lead with 5 minutes remaining.
Thankfully this was not the defining moment as Caradon showed fantastic spirit and pressed hard for the equaliser. This seasons top goal scorer, Bizzie Dinnis, turned over possession and scored from a tight angle much to everyone's delight!

Caradon had chances in the dying moments but it was left to the dreaded penalty shuffles to decide the winner.
Penalty Shuffles are a relatively new way of deciding a cup final so experience at them in an intense atmosphere had not been experienced before, but with keeper Helen Delbridge Caradon knew they stood a chance. Molly Walsh, Clare Mitchell, Bizzie Dinnis, Saffy Cripps and skipper Clare Poad were the nominated takers. In the first round 3 were converted, the same as Falmouth so the completion went to sudden death.
It was nail biting stuff and despite everyone's best efforts and Delbridge being the hero on numerous penalties, Falmouth scored the one that gave them the title. Winning 5-4 on penalties after 3-3 at full time.

Caradon 1s can be extremely proud of the hockey they played and the way they represented to club in such an intense atmosphere. This performance will give them confidence for the challenge of division 1 next year and the hope that they will get another chance in the cup final next year.
Helen Manley Thu, 05 May 2022 09:29:35 +0100 http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/finals_day__2s_plate_winners_1s_narrowly_miss_out_ http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/finals_day__2s_plate_winners_1s_narrowly_miss_out_ END OF SEASON 2021/22
Caradon Hockey Club held their end of 2021/22 season evening at St Mellion Resort last weekend and after waiting over 2 years since their last event due to the pandemic, it was a fantastic opportunity to get together and celebrate the club’s achievements.

Around 150 members and partners enjoyed a meal, then the Captain’s speeches began across all seven teams much to the cheering and laughter of the audience as memorable and funny moments from each team’s campaigns were remembered.

Caradon have enjoyed their first ‘proper’ season after last year’s was cut short as another lockdown stopped the league just before Christmas and what a season it has been especially for Caradon Ladies 1st team who secured promotion as undefeated champions of Division 2 South. They will also attempt the double as they face Falmouth 1s for the Cornwall Cup on 23rd April, alongside Caradon’s Ladies 2s who will target the Cornwall Plate on the same day against Newquay 2s.

Following the speeches, awards were handed out to each team’s Most Improved Player and Player of the Year as voted for by their teammates.

The evening then moved onto special awards – the Committee Cup to Claire Brown for her hard work behind the scenes on the committee sorting membership and payment every season for the past couple of years, as well as captaining the Ladies 2s. Determined to stick to their attacking style of hockey Caradon were starting to find holes in the Falmouth’s defence. Midfielder Saffy Cripps, who was making her debut, linked well with Charlie Harris and provided the hungry forwards with threaded through balls. It was from one of these passes by Harris that Caradon took the lead. Captain, Clare Poad, latched onto a perfectly weighted ball and as her shot deflected off the keeper into the air, Helen Manley batted the ball down into the goal for a surprise early lead.

As the first half continued, Caradon held firm with strong defensive play from the whole team. Beth Harris in usual dominant form held strong and any chances created were brilliantly saved by Player of The Match, Helen Delbridge. Falmouth were really piling on the pressure and with lots of players in the circle causing panic and confusion for Caradon, they scored twice before the break to see them lead 2-1.

A composed half time break came at a good time for Caradon to regroup and they played with zero fear as the second half started. Olivia Childs and Bizzie Dinnis combined well to keep Falmouth on the back foot. Falmouth knew that it was not going to be easy as they were now conceding more fouls in their defensive quarter. One of these free hits saw Fleur Worden fire the ball towards the circle, a dummy by Childs saw Poad with just the keeper to beat and on her reverse she made no mistake.

With the scores now level it was all to play for. Julia Eldridge and Emma Gliddon were just edging their 50/50 battles and it as against the run of play when Falmouth scored. Ten minutes were left on the clock and with the travelling supporters cheering them on, Caradon pushed hard for the equaliser. They had two great chances at penalty corners but the ball evaded the final touch by millimetres.

Falmouth retained possession well until the end and that final chance that Caradon were pushing for never came.

Although defeat in a final is never a nice thing, Caradon were really pleased with the effort and level of team play they produced on the day. They pushed the favourites right to the wire in a fiercely contested match played in just the right sprit.

Caradon begin their league campaign against Marjons this week.

PHOTOS: Glen Rogers

Helen Manley Tue, 20 Oct 2020 09:32:25 +0100 http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/caradon_ladies_1s__county_cup_finalists http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/caradon_ladies_1s__county_cup_finalists Caradon Ladies 2s - County Plate Winners!
CORNWALL PLATE FINAL
Caradon 2 – 3
Caradon 3 - 0

The Ladies County Plate Final was an all Caradon affair, with their 2nd team meeting their 3rd team for the first time competitively. The first 20 minutes was a closely fought contest, with the 2nd team having the majority of the possession but the 3rd team coming out on top with perfectly timed tackles and fast paced counter attacks. Their plan of taking the game to the 2s, tackling hard and closing them down to reduce time on the ball made the first half entertaining for the spectators.

It was in the last 10 minutes of the first half that saw Caradon 2’s finally settle into their passing game. A slip from Laura Hill to Vanessa Scott saw Scott drive at the goal, take it past the diving keeper and slot it in on her reverse.

The 1-0 lead at half time was the confidence boost the 2nd team needed and they started the second half with determination to increase their lead, meanwhile the 3s team talk was a belief they could get back on the game as the whistle started the last 35 minutes.

With some feisty play between 3’s Kirsty Merrin and 2s defender Rachel Spender, the determination was there from both sides to keep this plate final alive. Despite some great defending from 3s line up Emma Gliddon, Nicola Batten, Amber Jeffery and Sharon Jeffery it was a quick free hit from defender Claire Brown cut through the middle of the pitch to find Saffy Cripps, who dodged her defender and fed player of the match Scott, who calmly put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0. Special mention must go to Emily Joyce in goal for the 3s who made some incredible saves to prevent the scoreline being higher.

The 3rd team had a couple of quick breaks but the 2’s defence stood strong, playing some excellent passes around the back to switch the play and mount a counter attack. The 3rd and final goal was scored by Erryn Lockett, who was perfectly placed to pounce on a loose ball in front of goal and bundle it over the line. The 2nd team finished the game worthy winners and grateful to have played against their friends and teammates in such a well spirited match.

They will face each other once again on 24th October in the first league game of the season.

PHOTOS: JON HARRIS

Helen Manley Wed, 14 Oct 2020 08:49:27 +0100 http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/caradon_ladies_2s__county_plate_winners http://caradonhc.clubbuzz.co.uk/news/caradon_ladies_2s__county_plate_winners Returning to hockey - Covid advice
As pre-season friendlies begin and we look forward to the league starting on the 24th October, Caradon have already had recommendations put in place for being Covid safe for training and games.

EJ Mullis is our Covid Officer and should be contacted if you have any questions or concerns: 07769 563362

We have Track and Trace forms set up for our players to complete every time they attend training and play either home or away games.
