Match Report | Caradon 2s were straight back in action following the Christmas break with a rearranged fixture from last month, following a frozen pitch at Okehampton. Despite having a couple points lead at the top of the table, Caradon know they have a target on their backs especially with Okehampton in second place - this was still a massive game.
With plenty of subs there was no excuse for the visitors not to hit the ground running and after an initial bit of possession from Okehampton, Caradon started to thread passes together and the first goal came from Carina Hodge's determination on the D to find the space to strike home. This settled any nerves and with some brilliant sideline support, the visitors were back playing some lovely hockey.
Player of the match Kerryn Walsh, strong all afternoon in the screen position, set up goal number two as she saw Helen Manley making a run goalwards, her slip ball infront of an advancing Clare 'Poady' Poad made no mistake in slotting it past the keeper. It wasn't long after that Poady found the backboard again with a great solo effort and while Okehampton had their chances, the Caradon defence were communicating well and working hard for each other against any opportunities.
But, they did manage to squeeze through just before the half time whistle. With a very skillful midfield player dominating their attacks they finally broke through with a goal against the run of play, 3-1.
After a positive half time talk, Caradon came out hungry for more goals and they didn't have to wait long for one. Abi Fulford who had dominated the left wing with some impressive runs and stretching tackles bagged a deserved goal for herself as Caradon got back into their groove once more.
But the visitors weren't finished yet. An excellently worked short corner saw Laura Hill strike low and hard to Neve Hunn on the post to deflect in, 5-1.
The final goal came in the last 10 minutes following another short corner routine, with the ball almost going off the back line it was saved and dragged back across the front of the goal for Lauren Gouge to tap in for goal number 6 to finish the game.
With a friendly next week, Caradon will want to keep their eye in and fitness up ready for the official restart of the season on January 20th with an away trip to Newquay. |
