Match Report |
A 3-1 win for the men's 2's today against Plymouth Uni 3's. We looked like we were going to put several goals past them today with Ben P-R scoring a solid well struck goal from a short corner in the first 5 minutes and then narrowly missing another about a minute later. We were firmly in control for the next 10 minutes with Jon P-R receiving the ball on the base line from Ben via Jason Brown and dribbling up to the keeper who was poorly positioned and flicking the ball into the net. Up to this point we were playing some of our best hockey of the season with short, accurate, punchy passes leaving the opposition chasing shadows. We built moves from the defence to the opposition D with ease. Great to see so many of our youngsters involved feeding off the experience of our defensive line. Uni scored their slightly sketchy goal after a goalmouth scramble and decisions not going our way. After this however we lost our focus a little ( possibly due to the horrible weather conditions and cold wet fingers with no feeling in) and this meant that we had to rely on Toby Riddle, Jason Brown , Tim Wright, James North Carl, Jeffrey and Paul Rowe in defence who thwarted attack after attack. Not forgetting Ted Dyer who quietly and unassumingly worked tirelessly. 2-1 at halftime. The second half started quite brightly for us but we were again unable to finish. The Plymouth tackling got sloppier with our youngsters often taking the brunt of it. One card was issued to the Uni team for Shoulder barging and we felt sure another was following moments later but the decision was given against us and 2 minutes off for Ben P-R. It all began to unravel a bit after this and again if it were not for our defence, notably Tim, Toby and Jason we would have been scuppered. In the end it took Jason Brown to step up and show the forwards how it was done by smashing our final goal into the backboard. Shortly after this Jack Rowe who put in a great shift today launched himself with a little too much enthusiasm at a Uni player tackling Aussie Rules style which earned him a straight yellow. Toby Pickering demonstrated his calmness on the ball today and were it not for the multiple undetected stick tackles on him, may well have added to the score sheet. A hard earned victory in the end but a win nevertheless. Motm went to Jason Brown because it felt like we couldn't have done it without him. Well done today boys!
