Match Report |
Caradon travelled to Cardiff to play a strong Cardiff university team and despite losing 7-1 competed well and had good phases of play during the match.
After last weeks confidence building performance, Caradon played with good composure and there was very little between the teams for the first 20 minutes. The deadlock was broken when Cardiff scored with a crisp low strike from a penalty corner. The students continued to pile on the pressure and just before half time, doubled thier lead with another powerful penalty corner strike.
The game became a physical battle and it was Cardiff who were coming out on top, forcing more penalty corners early in the second half. Caradons goalkeeper, Helen Dellbridge, was called into action but despite pulling off numerous great saves the scoreline was soon 5-0. Caradon did not let thier heads drop and began to play with more attacking freedom. Libby Walsh and Beth Harris were finding themselves in more forward positions and player of the match Jess Berrys' endless running was rewarded with an attacking penalty corner was awarded for a foul on the young striker.
A well worked routine of a Walsh injection, Jules Butterworth stick stop and Saffy Cripps strike gave the visitors the goal they had deserved.
With nothing to loose, Caradon pushed forward and and should have scored a second but a hasty umpires whistle awarded a corner as the ball crossed the line. To rub salt in the wound, Cardiff immediately went up the other end and scored a well worked break away goal.
Despite the loss, Caradon will have learnt a lot and will continue to grow as a team in the coming weeks.
The long away journeys this team will have to make this season has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of transport by Bond Timber.
