Match Report |
A bright start to the season for the Men's 2's today. Travelling to Duchy usually means that we get to play much stronger team than their travelling 11 but if this was the case today then I am looking forward to our rematch. A 5-0 victory is a brilliant way to begin. Lots of notable play today so apologies if I miss anyone out. We were deadlocked for about the first 25 minutes and then the floodgates opened. We had several opportunities but were unable to capitalise with Martyn Bevins dazzling the Duchy defenders with his sublime stick control, winning us short corner after short corner which sadly we could not convert - possibly now an area to work on in training. We absorbed the pressure from the Duchy attacks with poise and they rarely looked like scoring. Tim Wright put in a great shift using his experience to marshal the Caradon defence. Fittingly Bevins opened the scoring with a great strike. Our tally was added to shortly afterwards when Joe Stewart was customarily in the right place at the right time for a tap in at the far post supplied by Ted Dyer. Ben P-R scored the third with an excellent solo effort beating two defenders (one of which should have been sent off for his outrageous stick tackle - a common feature during the match) and then slamming the ball home with a cheeky tomahawk. 3-0 at half time made the team talk a little easier but we kept our focus ad added two further goals in the second half one from Jon P-R hovering up a scrappy rebound and one when Sam P-R was rewarded for his constant effort when he pulled off the ' good grief I was lucky that that went in" award. This occured when his pass from the base line caught the keeper napping as it slipped in behind him. A great end to a satisfying team performance. Garry Mueller continually operated under the radar swooping in to make tenacious tackles and interceptions. Ted Dyer demonstrated his exceptional game-reading ability, consistently disrupting opposition attacks and Joe Stewart had a fantastic second half (earning himself man of the match) using his deft skill to skin any who tried to tackle him. It was great to welcome Jack Rowe into the bosom of our team as he proved himself to be a strong player in several different positions. We couldn't have wished for a better start so let's hope that the rest of the season continues in this vein.
