Match Report | Caradon Men's 1st XI hockey team kicked off their new season in spectacular fashion as they hosted newly promoted OPM at Lux Park. In a game filled with surprises and exceptional performances, Caradon secured a resounding 13-1 victory, leaving them sitting comfortably at the top of the table after just one game.
Heading into the match, Caradon faced some uncertainty, with only 11 players available, an unfamiliar opponent in OPM, and a new formation to test out. Nevertheless, any doubts were quickly put to rest as Caradon displayed their determination and skill on the field.
The game began with a burst of aggression from Caradon, earning them a short corner in the opening minutes. David Fasey unleashed a powerful shot, only to be denied by an astonishing stick save from OPM's goalkeeper. Caradon's early pressure paid off soon after when Angus Harley found Ben Reynolds in acres of space. Ben rounded the keeper with composure and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Ben Reynolds continued to be the star of the show, battling through OPM's defense to score his second goal shortly thereafter. Caradon maintained their attacking prowess, applying relentless pressure and finding the back of the net on several occasions. Chris Fasey capitalized on a Tyler Walsh shot at the far post, while Ben completed his hat-trick with a cheeky roll and reverse dink past the keeper.
OPM, however, displayed their attacking prowess, pulling the Cornish defense out of position and creating an overload to score a well-executed reverse goal past Caradon's goalkeeper, Dan Harris. Nevertheless, Caradon quickly regained control as Chris Fasey found Tyler in space, leading to another goal.
The first half ended with Caradon firmly in the driver's seat, leading 7-1, thanks to Ben Reynolds' fourth goal of the match.
As the second half got underway, Caradon maintained their attacking stance. Both teams started to show signs of fatigue, creating more open spaces on the field, which Caradon effectively utilized. Ben Reynolds continued his scoring spree in the second half, adding to his tally. Drew Champion joined the scoring party, knocking the ball past the keeper at the far post.
Chris Fasey netted his second goal of the game, slapping a baseline pass from Harrison Pollard into the bottom corner. Drew Champion secured his second goal of the match, ensuring Chris's shot found its way over the goal line.
Caradon then briefly experimented with a more defensive formation, although this was short-lived as OPM failed to commit enough players to their attack to make it worthwhile. Returning to their original formation, Caradon capitalized on the space once again, with Chris Fasey completing his hat-trick.
The final goal of the game showcased brilliant teamwork, starting with Tyler on the right, giving a cross-field pass to Liam. Liam knocked the ball forward to Drew, who drove inside before feeding the ball to Chris. Chris executed a first-time slap, directing it to Ben, who deflected it in to the advancing keeper. Harry then pounced on the loose ball, slotting it into the bottom corner.
As the final whistle blew, Caradon celebrated a stunning 13-1 victory, setting a high bar for the season ahead. With their dominant performance, Caradon Men's 1st XI now sits proudly at the top of the league table after their first game. |
