Match Report | Caradon 2s faced recently promoted Duchy for a third time this season and after getting well beaten in the first meeting, narrowly missing out on a point despite no goalkeeper in the second match, no one quite knew what to expect from this game - the quarter final of the Cornwall Cup.
A blistering hot day at Lux Park proved to be an additional obstacle for both sides as the end to end game kept everyone running in the heat. An encouraging team talk by captain Claire Brown got the 2s into the right frame of mind to start the match, probably being viewed as the underdogs, she wanted an enjoyable game that whatever the result the team could be proud of.
They started well, pushing up the field and piling the pressure on the visitors. But Duchy, clearly high in confidence after being crowned Trelawney 1 champions, were strong in counter attacks and keeping Caradon opportunities to a minimum.
Trying a slightly different setup, the home side knew the strengths of the Duchy midfield in particular and had extra players to support the defence in the middle line of the formation. Both teams had chances but nothing significant to break the deadlock and with frustration came sloppy stick tackles and a few shoves and falls leaving to stoppage for injuries - so the half way break came at a good time for everyone to calm down, take on a drink and reassess.
Caradon took a stronger hold of the game in the second half and looked the more likely side to score.
With 15 minutes to go and the pressure of penalties if the score remained a draw at the final whistle, Caradon continued to hold the ball and push for a result. Charlotte Harrison picked up a pass in the Caradon third and ran the length of the pitch up the right wing line, attempts from Duchy to try and stop her were thwarted as she continued to push through. Like a textbook drill, she ran the baseline and placed a perfect ball at an angle to Katie Fear who was waiting past the keeper to tap home - much to the team and home supporters delight.
With all players clearly tiring in the heat, Caradon simply had to hang on for the final 10. They kept the ball and all worked hard to keep Duchy out, turning around a quick counter attack and winning short corner in the final few seconds. Despite not converting this, the final whistle blew and the celebrations began.
Caradon 2s now face another tough challenge in the semi final this weekend against Falmouth 1s of two leagues above them, in Truro with a 1.30pm pushback. |
