Women's 2nd XI Vs Newquay 2s - Cup Match

Caradon 2s had a break from the league season with their final game in the group stage of the County Cup against Newquay 2s at Lux Park.

Despite a few changes to the squad due to injuries and unavailability, the home side settled quickly into some good flows of passing hockey.  

The midfield of Natalie Ridgers, Abbie Fulford and Lauren Gouge worked hard to push the ball forward, picking tackles and finding space. As the first half progressed it become more of an evenly matched game with Newquay having their own chances in the D but the back line of Claire Brown, Annie Williams and Marcia Burgess protected their goal and keeper. 

In the second half, Caradon utilised more of the space on the wings. Nicole Harding in the pivot position was making brilliant play opportunities and it felt like a goal was coming but there just wasn't the final finish. The home side had chances with short corners, but the Newquay goalkeeper was in form with her feet clearing strikes away.

With time running out and penalty flicks if the score remained a draw, Caradon continued to press and find that goal their hard work deserved. They found a quick break, Jess Berry on the right wing ran with confidence pushing through the Newquay attempts to tackle her and found Jayne Longrigg in space. Along with her fellow forward Helen Manley, the two had only the keeper to beat. Jayne slipped the ball to Manley who struck low and hard to finally get past the keeper. 

As the final minutes played out Caradon kept the ball and the score to 1-0, they will find out who they face next in the Cup shortly as teams in higher leagues join the competition.

They return to Trelawney 1 fixtures next week with a late away pushback against St Austell.
