Match Report

Caradon 2s faced Plymouth University 2 in their last league game of the 2022/23 season at Lux Park on Saturday, knowing that third place was already secured.

Still keen to finish the season with a win, despite missing five key players in defence, midfield and attack, other players came in and fit in quickly. A change in the setup on the field continued from last week's eventful game against Duchy, but after the young Uni side scored two quick goals the side returned to the more known line up this season and this seemed to settle Caradon as they chased to catch up.

Abi Fulford got Caradon back into the game following a long ball upfield but Uni were a quick side on the counter attack and with Caradon defenders caught high, they got the 2 goal lead ahead once more. Just before the break Katie Fear finished off a brilliant team goal as one, two touches went through the park to fellow striker Jayne Longrigg who slipped to Katie to slot home.

The score at half time was 3-2 and was a good reflection of the game so far with Uni just having the edge.

The visitors had the chance to increase their lead with a succession of short corner opportunities but Caradon stood strong clearing wide and with Lynn Oxenham returning in goal worked well communicating with her back line.

Unfortunately Caradon were caught out again with a quick turn and burn as Plymouth made it 4-2 with less than 10 minutes to go. The home team had chance to grab a point with moments infront of goal but were just missing the final finish.

Finishing third in Trelawney 1 equals their position last year but with a few more draws than losses, progress was made. If they can turn those draws into wins next year, there's no reason they can't push for second or even promotion next season.

Still in the Cornwall Cup, there is still hockey left to play in a few weeks time as they face up against league winners Duchy once more.
