Ultimately a good win for Caradon Men's 2's at home against a much improved Plymouth University 3rd's. A bright start for Caradon saw a few chances unconverted but then against the run of play, Plymouth scored on their first opportunity. The goal was an excellent solo effort ending in a huge strike into the net, highlighting just how dangerous some of their players could be. Caradon calmly reset and quickly scored 2 goals on the bounce, Ben P-R converting a strong cross from Mike Parkinson and the second coming quickly afterwards when Martyn Bevins showed his class slotting the ball home. It was end to end stuff after this with Plymouth mounting great attacks often centred around ex-Caradon player Matt Lampshire who put on a strong performance for his new team. Plymouth had a few exceptional players but for the most part these players were neutralised by relentless Caradon defence and mid-field control. Yet again the defensive four showed exactly why the 2's season is so competative. Bevins added our 3rd after a well worked move involving Drew Champion and Ted Dyer. Caradon's 4th goal came when Ben P-R received the ball just outside the circle, dribbled it in and pulled off an amazing tomahawk shot straight into the back of the net. Plymouth clawed one back before half-time still leaving a 2 goal buffer for the home team. The second half continued to go to plan with Caradon having much of the play and starting to feel firmly in control. Bevins strke from a short pounding the backboard. With the score at 5-2 the result seemed inevitable, with thoughts of adding a few more to our impressive tally. Rock solid defending saw Tim Wright stop the ball on the line which proved to be key as Plymouth after gaining another yellow card for the same player decided that now was the time to turn things around. They scored a quick well worked goal and then were straight back with another from a mis-hit shot from the edge of the D (contentiously, probably the wrong edge of the line) soared above everyone to clatter in top bins! The newly fired-up uni team continued to try hard and Caradon had a few short corners and other chances but neither team was able to score any more. A hard fought victory for what on paper should have been a straightforward game.
