Caradon ONES put out a brilliant team performance to beat a good Shepton Mallet team 4-1.
Despite the 2 1/2 hour road trip, Caradon looked fresh from the first whistle. Determined to take control of the fixture, strong tackles from the midfield meant lots of turn over play and pressure in the Sheptons' circle. The first penalty corner was awarded and Molly Walsh scored her first of the day with an accurate drag flick into the bottom corner.
Cardon continued to play thier attacking style of hockey and more penalty corners were awarded. With a change up in routine, Bizzie Dinnis' powerful slide pass to the far post was neatly deflected in by Walsh.
As the half time whistle came, Caradon were in total control and were looking to mange the game to secure the points. Shepton continued to push hard and had a good 20 minutes, but Caradon stood strong with excellent performances from the defence of Emma Gliddon, Amy Batty and Daisy Hunn.
As the home team began to run out of ideas Caradon broke with pace. Saffy Cripps started a move that found Poad and then Dinnis who drew the defenders and her weighted pass found Clare Mitchell with the option to shoot or return pass to Dinnis. With great composure Mitchell finished the move in a calm clinical fashion to give Caradon a 3 goal cushion.
To Sheptons' credit they never gave up and scored a great individual goal that despite Helen Delbridge's acrobatic dive found the backboard from the tightest of angles.
With 10 minutes remaining Libby Walsh intercepted a pass, beat several players before her mazy run found her in the circle and delivered the perfect ball for Captain Clare Poad to fire home.
Another 3 points for this settled team means that next weeks home fixture against Falmouth will see the winners take top spot in the league. A true 6 pointer lies in wait at Lux Park 2pm
