Match Report |
A 6-0 loss to top of the table Tavistock for the men’s 2’s on Saturday. The score line did not reflect the play and frankly flattered our admittedly strong opposition. We started very brightly with close man to man marking and heroic tackling, which left the opposition stunned and frustrated. They were clearly expecting little resistance and got a lot more than they bargained for. Their first goal came mid-way through the first half but didn’t dampen spirits. We had a couple of slight opportunities but were unable to capitalise. Sadly, we conceded our second goal just before half time. The biggest kick in the teeth moment we had was when a well worked move culminated in Ben P-R finding himself unmarked in front of goal, as he lifted his stick to strike, the half time whistle was blown… It was fully dark and bitterly cold by this point but the team spirit was great and we were ready for the second half. Awaiting push back for 'round 2' we were approached by the umpire to tell us that we now would have to wait (on the pitch) until after the school fireworks display had finished but after some strong meteorological discussions and reflections on current air temperature it was decided that we should play with a seriously dramatic backdrop. Unfortunately, this did little to inspire us and for the second half much of the play was centred around our D. Two of the goals were questionable at best which is sad given the fact that it was clear that they were going to win anyway. James North made a dramatic contribution after swooping on at half time and then swooping off with a yellow after approximately one weighty challenge. Admittedly, this was in response to some disappointingly aggressive and wholly unnecessary play from Tavistock, which went largely unnoticed. As with any match there are lots of things that can be learned from this one and points to reflect on but for me the predominant thing to comment on was the pure heart that was demonstrated by the entire team. People played with guts and commitment. Heads did not drop and people ran to the last. Toby made some dramatic saves denying further insult (and nearly saved a flick), the defence were rock solid and mid-field demonstrated wonderful skill, building great moves. Freddie was hit by so many balls but did not allow this to hinder him. As with last week everyone deserves a mention. Well done to all who took part.
