Match Report

Caradon Ladies 2s made their last away trip of the season down to Truro to play Newquay 2s, and in the trend this year for them, were faced with another game played in wind and rain during a yellow weather warning.

They didn’t let the drenching get them down and after a confident start, midfielder Helen Manley jumped on a misjudged pass from the Newquay defence and struck from the top of the D to get scoring going and settle any nerves against a changed side from the last time they played.

Vanessa Scott looked in the mood for goals from the off and her skilful and calm pick up of a pass from Natatlie Ridgers, she took minimal touches to tap around the keeper and in to make it 0-2. Her second goal was almost a carbon copy with Nat’s chipped pass jumping over the defenders stick, Vanessa pinched the ball, brought the keeper out and dodged around her to slip home, 0-3 at half time.

With the elements almost acting like a 12th player to tackle, the team had to dig deep to keep the momentum against the wind. Newquay’s impressive young midfielder had the opportunity to create chances but the strong back line of Claire Brown, Rachel Spencer, Nicole Harding and Marcia Burgess with Lynn Oxenham standing defiant behind them in goal, chances were thwarted.

The visitors went 0-4 up when a shot from in form Vanessa nearly got her hat trick, but it was Katie Fear who was quickest to react to the bounce off the post and grab herself a goal for the day.

Caradon hadn’t managed to get anything from their short corner routines so far in the afternoon, but in a change to the normal drill Natalie found herself on the end of a slipped ball. Her strike towards the left post was saved but Neve Hunn got a touch past the keeper and grabbed her chance to score. Despite the weather, the team enjoyed the game, the flow of their play and the space they had to run in and play some lovely looking hockey. Player of the Match was shared between Neve and Vanessa for their skill and calm passages of play, keeping Caradon in the game and Newquay out.

With the 3 points and other results around them on the table going their way, the win secured Caradon third place in Trelawney 1 this season – an impressive result considering how many games have been played with team members out of position, shows that this team can adapt, keep calm and carry on.
