Match Report | Caradon Ladies 2s travelled to Lipson for a later pushback against Plymouth Uni 2s. After two draws against the top teams in recent weeks, the 2s were keen to get back to winning ways and saw this as their chance to grab 3 points. After a pre-match chat which included the encouragement to shoot as soon as they got in the D, it was just this type of goal which set Caradon on their way as Helen Manley struck hard and low from the top of the circle to settle any nerves. It was still early in the game so Caradon wanted another to see if they were really in the mood for goals this Saturday. The desire was met by frustration as a looping hit from Vanessa Scott was disallowed. Ironically it wasn't long after she did indeed get her first of the day from a looping ball into the goal - this one approved. This encouragement gave Caradon the confidence to use the space and play some impressive through balls onto goal and create chances. One such piece of perfectly weighted through ball from Natalie Ridgers in midfield found Ellen Spencer in the D to hit hard past the keeper. Kirsty Merrin had another sterling shift working well with Bryony Gubbins on the wing and Emma Gliddon between defence and midfield frustrating the student side. Laura Hill was next on the scoresheet, battling hard for her goal; despite being floored by the keeper her determination just got the ball over the line to make it 4-0 at half time. In the second half Plymouth Uni started stronger but the Caradon press pushed them backward to passing around the back, leading to mistakes pounced on by the visitors. The Uni side had a few chances to break on the counter attack but efforts were thwarted by Amber Jeffery, Rachael Spencer and Nicole Harding strong at the back, Lynn Oxenham in goal had a quiet game but again, powerful kicks cleared the ball away from threat. Such a clearance from the back was grabbed by Kirsty who turned on her marker passing to Vanessa who skilfully slotted home. With Vanessa clear on goal once more, she dinked around the flailing keeper whose only way of stopping the goal was to take out the striker bringing her to the floor. A penalty was awarded and put away for her hat trick and up to 6-0. Caradon were now on full flow playing some lovely hockey, a brilliant team goal was worked up the park and put away by Ellen for her second. Despite time running out Caradon didn't hold back on their chances and the game finished as it started with Helen dodging past the defender to strike from the top of the D into the bottom corner to finish the game 8-0. Player of the match went to Neve Hunn, who is really coming into her own in the pivot position and controlled a lot of the play in this win. Caradon welcome Bodmin to Lux on Saturday, with the visitors one point above them it will be an important game. |
