Match Report

Caradon Ladies 2s played their first cup game of the campaign, having had their previous two fixtures conceded or cancelled and with Storm Eunice still making herself known on the drive down, Caradon were unsure if a game would be waiting for them.

Sideways rain, high and bitter winds did meet them but with the game going ahead, Caradon put their game faces on to face Falmouth 2 who currently sit unbeaten at the top of their league. Having played them once already in Trelawney 1 this season, the visitors knew they weren’t just up against the weather but up against a strong and impressive side. Despite missing a few regular players and changing positions on the pitch, Caradon came out fighting and were unlucky to go 1-0 down following a short where keen defenders were punished by being sent to the halfway line leaving eventually only two defenders and the goalie to try and stop the hard, low shot.

With the wind behind them Caradon pushed forward and had chances with some lovely passing up the field. But Falmouth showed their skill, particularly with a star play maker in the middle of the team who constantly set up breaks and chances getting their team 3-0 up at half time.

Shivering and cowering in the elements, captain Claire Brown delivered an interval chat encouraging the team to keep pushing, it felt like a goal was coming. Ten minutes into the second half, Falmouth scored another slick goal and with players being unable to hear the umpires whistle, the umpires comments, their fellow players and with wind and rain in eyes and flying hockey balls it was becoming unplayable weather. Caradon took the decision to end the game, knowing despite their best efforts they weren’t going to find 5 goals today.

Player of the match was goalkeeper Lynn Oxenham, who even with the worst storm in 30 years in her face and vision, made some incredible dives and saves. Caradon put up a heroic performance and can look forward to Falmouth coming to Lux Park in the league in a few weeks, where they can try again.
A big game for the 2s this weekend, with an away game against Bodmin who are just 1 point above them in third and the chance for points and jumping up the league up for grabs.
