Women's 2nd XI Vs Penzance

Caradon 2s faced Penzance 1s at Lux Park in the semi final of the Cornwall County Plate Tournament in what was their final match of the season.

Caradon started the game with real enthusiasm, chasing down the ball and giving Penzance no time to settle into their passes. They put pressure on all over the pitch, got in some good strong tackles and showed Penzance – two leagues above Caradon – that they were in no mood to be walked all over.

Penzance caught Caradon on a counter attack to get their first goal, but the 2s stuck to the game plan and continued with the pressure, with Player of the Match Lynn Oxenham in goal saving a penalty flick. Some incredible running in midfield earned Caradon a short corner, where a swift injection from Lauren Gouge saw Ellen Spencer pass to Laura Hill, who popped it cleanly back across the goal to Vanessa Scott who was waiting to slip it past the flailing Penzance keeper. A real team effort and reward for a fantastic spell of play.

After a bout of short corners, Penzance secured another goal and the first half ended 1-2.

As the second half started, Penzance were riled and really ramped up the attack, but the Caradon defence of Leah Jones, Rachael Spencer, Claire Brown and Abi Larigo made some fantastic tackles to keep themselves in the game. Despite a few more darting runs and attempts at goal, Caradon were unable to capitalise and the experience and skill of Penzance was beginning to overcome a tired Caradon team who had truly given their all.

Penzance scored a further 2 goals to win the game and progress to the Plate Final tomorrow. Caradon finished proud of the whole team effort and just happy to have had some pitch time in what has been a very disjointed season. They look forward to a summer break and returning in September for – hopefully – a full season .
