Match Report | Caradon travelled to truro to take on Newquay in the semi final of the Cornwal county cup on saturday and came away with the victory which will see them face Falmouth in the final to be played on the 17th October. Previous encounters between these two teams have always been close but Newquay normally edge the victory. Caradon started the match with a great intensity and immediately put pressure on Newquays' defence. Closing down play and unsettling the defenders led to the first goal when Bizzie Dinnis stole the ball off a defender and after a pass and follow move with skipper, Clare Poad, forced the ball over the line at the far post. Caradon were encouraged with how the game had started and continued at pace, moving the ball well between players and creating goal scoring oppertunities. Katie Jones was powering her way through on the left hand side and was rewarded when she was on hand to finish good build up play fron Carrina Hodge and Sadie Mullis. Newquay were shocked at how easy Caradon were creating chances and seemed dazed when the third goal came shortly after. A great team goal with accurate and direct passing by Jones and Dinnis, allowed Poad to slot home past the despairing keeper. Caradon were in complete control and Olivia Childs steam rolled her way into the circle to make it 4-0 after 30 minutes. Just as the half time whistle came, a Newquay penalty corner was awarded and they scored to give them hope for the second half. The first half performance would be difficult to replicate and it was Newquay who really started to turn the screw. Overpowering the midfield who were unsure of whether to hold or press and soon the score was 4-3. Caradon were now having to hang on to the win. Beth Harris had yet another commanding performance in the center of the park and Julia Eldridge and Fleur Worden were in no mood to allow any clear shots on goal. Caradon did have attacking phases in the second half but struggled to maintain enough possesion to make the spectaors viewing comfortable. The forwards were not as clinical as in the first half and the team were struggling to find real space on the wings resulting in a scrap in the center of pitch. Eldridge, Childs and Jones deservingly were voted joint player of the match for thier battling performance. As the final whistle came, Caradon had fought thier way into the final in a game that they really did deserve to win over the 70 minutes. Caradon will prepare for the final with a game aginst Penzance this week and can expect another tough encounter with the team that pipped them to the league title last season.
