Match Report | Caradon Ladies 2nd team welcomed a return to competitive play with a Cornwall plate semi final match against Bodmin, which had been due to be played before Corona virus halted all hockey back in March. They started the match where they left off last season, looking fit and strong with some great interlinking play across the pitch. Early pressure in the Bodmin half saw Natalie Ridgers pounce on a loose ball and slot it calmly past the keeper. Caradon didn’t let up that pressure and launched numerous attacks. Their second goal came from a driving run by Vanessa Scott, who finished cleanly to make it 2-0. Despite a series of short corners in quick succession and a missed Penalty Flick, Caradon were not able to capitalise until Saffy Barriball-Cripps popped up on the wing, intercepted the ball and drove hard at the D. A quick shimmy past the defender and she struck it sweetly from a tight angle to secure a 3-0 lead going in to half time. The second half saw Caradon continue to grow in confidence – with a decent lead they took the opportunity to pass the ball around a little more. The defence stood firm and quietly snuffed out any hint of a Bodmin attack, redistributing the ball to the midfield who all worked tirelessly to link up passes and feed the forwards. It was this good example of team passing that secured goal four, when a ball from the back found Scott, who shrugged off her defender to score her second of the day. The fifth and final goal of the day was scored by Bryony Gubbins, who once again ran rings around the Bodmin defence to go on and score from a spectacular mid air strike. An impressive start for the Caradon 2nd team who will now face their club’s 3rd team in the Plate Final on 10th October. |
