Match Report

After a great run in the league, Caradon Ladies 2s were looking for their first win in the group stages of the County Cup. After losing their first group match against Duchy, Caradon knew they needed to get a result against a Newquay 2s team sitting just below them in the league table.

The first half saw Caradons defence of Leah Jone, Rach Spencer, Claire Brown and Rach Luiten hold strong against relentless attacks by Newquay. Caradons keeper Zoe Harris had to make numerous saves to ensure the teams went in level at half time. There had been flashes of brilliance by Caradons attack in the first half, but again, excellent defending by Newquay and their keeper also ensured they kept a clean sheet in the first half.

Caradon were out of the blocks quickly in the second half and started to create more chances. With goals coming from so many players in the 2s this season, it was Charlotte Reed who slotted home the first goal of the game with neat play from the midfield of Bryony Gubbins, Natalie Ridgers, Marcia Burgess and Erryn Lockett. Vanessa Scott and Ellen Spencer continued to work hard up front looking for the second goal, but a quick break away from Newquay gave them the equalising goal.

With less than a minute left on the clock, Caradon continued to press Newquay and were rewarded when Ellen Spencer took a strike on goal which deflected off a Newquay foot into the goal to win the game for Caradon right at the final whistle. Player of the Match was jointly won by Claire Brown and Ellen Spencer.

Caradon 2s now have a break until the 11th January when they will travel to Camborne SOM 2s for their last group County Cup match.
