Match Report

Caradon delivered a mature and disciplined performance against a full strength Exeter University team to earn themselves a point, which sees them secure third place in the league with two games remaining.

With traffic problems resulting in a rather rushed warm up, Caradon knew they had to be concentreted from the start. Changing thier formation to combat this excellant passing team, Caradon were patient and allowed the students much of the ball in the opening exchanges. With the teams shape staying solid their were limited chances on goal from either side, but Caradon were happy to go into the half time break knowing thier game plan was working and it was Exeter who were starting to look frustrated.

The second half started with caradon having some pressure of thier own and they forced penalty corners which forced good saves from the keeper. A switch in routine saw player of the match, Fleur Worden, strike from a tight angle at one of the penalty corners to give the visitors an unexpected lead.

Marcia Burgess was chief organiser in the middle of the park and was backed up by the confidant Amy batty. They both worked hard to keep Caradons shape and nullify and attacking threats. As Exeter pushed forward, looking for the equaliser, gaps were starting to appear at the back. Helen Manley took on numerous players to find herself in the circle and was unlucky not to score. Half chances were there for the taking but just couldnt be converted and Caradon were hoping to run down the clock.

A rare penalty corner for the students, ten minutes from time was well worked to find a deflection at the far post and the scores were level.

Both teams competed right to the last whistle, with intensity levels increasing Lucie kay was shown a green card but Exeter could not make the player advantage pay and had to settle for the draw. This result not only secured third spot for Caradon but means Newquay leapfrog Exeter University and are now favourites for the league title.
