Match Report | Caradon played the last match in thier league campaign and beat already relegated Exeter 10-1 to secure a fantastic third place in the South league, a position that has only been bettered once before in the ten year history of the club. With a full squad available, Caradon started at a strong pace, knowing that an early goal was crucail to settle any end of season nerves. With all other league results in, the home team knew that only a win would secure a top three finish. The first goal of the day started from a surging run from defender, Fleur Worden, who set top goal scorer, Bizzie Dinnis to claim her first of the day. The second goal came soon after when Beth Harris (Most impoved award winner) deflected in a Clare Poad shot at the far post and Caradon were 2-0 up after 9 minutes. This quick start, however, seemed to apply the hand brake to the Cornish team who began to look lethargic and play suddenly lacked the earlier intensity. Exeter somehow bundled a goal in just before half time and Caradon needed the half time break to re focus. With everyone in the Caradon team determined not to slip at the last hurdle, they started the second half with a much improved urgency and dominated play. Wave after wave of attack hit the Exeters' defence and almost every midfielder and forward had a chance to score. The substitute rotation system was working well for the home team with the full squad contributing to the increased pressure. The sideline spectators were treated to an attacking masterclass with goals being scored from penalty corners, succesfull counter attacks, converted aerial passes and pass and move phases of play. Bizzie Dinnis took her tally to 5 for the day, Clare Poad grabbed a hat trick and Beth Harris claimed 2 deflections. The final whistle came and confirmation of a top three league finish. The 1s' squad has evolved throughout the season with new players improving the strength and depth of the team and adding to unique team spirit that has been the foundation to thier succesful season. Next season the squad will be looking to improve more and hopefully grab that elusive promotion. Squad members: Helen Delbridge (GK), Amy Batty, Lucie Kay, Julia Eldridge, Fleur Worden, Nic Dymond, Marcia Burgess, Helen Manley, Carrina Hodge, Beth Harris, Lauren Gouge, Sadie Mullis, Clare Poad (Capt), Bizzie Dinnis |
