Match Report

Cornwall Cup
Falmouth 1: 6
Caradon 2: 1

Caradon 2s knew they had a hard draw facing Falmouth 1s in their first round of the Cornwall Cup, a team currently top of South Division - a league above Trelawney 1. But they travelled down to Penryn, knowing that the pressure wasn't on them and they had nothing to lose but to go out and play the best they could.
Missing some regular defenders in what was obviously going to be a game needing a strong defence, Caradon shuffled around players and those who were moved around coped well in their temporary positions particularly EJ Mullis who hung in strong in the left back role. The back three were also aided by Player of the Match Nic Dymond who made important tackles and cleared confidently to the wings. Caradon appeared a little daunted by the team they faced in the first few minutes, rushing to clear balls and slow to react to passing it seemed to take a Falmouth goal to actually give them a wake up call. Suddenly Caradon looked a threat despite being 1-0 down.

Using the wings, Daisy Hunn and Sadie Mullis made effective runs and passes into the D. It was a scramble in the D which resulted in Caradon's equaliser, with the goalie outstretched on the floor from saving an initial shot, Helen Manley reacted quickly to chip the ball over the lying keeper and into the goal. It was deserved after Caradon upped their game. They almost took the lead with Katie Jones making an excellent chance, only to be floored by the out racing Falmouth goalkeeper.

Happy, if a little surprised to go into the second half on equal terms, Caradon knew that if they didn't come out with the same fighting spirit, Falmouth could pounce on the chance to take the lead. Unfortunately this is what happened. Despite their best efforts, the inevitable happened and Falmouth's higher league skills and pace started to shine and the goal floodgates opened. Each goal that followed was undeniably well worked including a one touch deflection in the D, and an impressive counter attack with passing between almost every team member. Bekki Eddy in goal saved numerous other chances with some excellent point blank shot stopping, preventing the goal difference getting any wider.

Although the final score finished 6-1, which reflected the second half, Caradon showed a good account of themselves with periods of excellent passing. They now go into the Cornwall Plate competition, to defend the title they currently hold.
