Match Report

Caradon 2s travelled down to a wet and blustery Truro to face Trelawney 1 newcomers, Newquay 2. From the start of the game it was clear that Caradon wanted all the points this week, after the previous two weeks disappointment the passion was back and all players across the field pushed hard from the off.
The play was mostly in the visiting half as Caradon were impressive with their passing, looking like the team were really starting to gel. Movement off the ball and one-two passing up the wings, especially by player of the match Daisy Hunn made Caradon look the more likely team to score. A frustratingly slippery pitch due to the weather conditions and overhanging trees caused many players to fall, cruicially for Sarah 'Browner' Strevens at times running towards goal. But, Caradon won the first shot corner of the game and after practising a few new options in the warm up were unlucky not to go one up after a superb save from the Newquay goalkeeper.

With four regular 2s players out this week, it was an impressive move up for Katie Johnston and Katie Jones with the latter causing the Newquay defence many problems with her confident runs towards goal. Despite the chances open to Caradon they went into the half time break at 0-0.

As expected Newquay came out strong from the second half whistle, with two quick chances including an open goal opportunity which was miss hit and scuttled off the back line, much to the relief of Caradon who would have felt hard done by going down after so much pressure. Suddenly for a large part of the match Caradon won short corner after short corner but simply could not convert. Browner tried first time strikes, slips to left and right while Helen Manley's top of the D strike was saved off the line and pinged onto the post by a Newquay defender and quickly cleared away.
As the minutes ticked away, Caradon continued to press for the goal they deserved and despite a quick counter push by the home side, this was quickly put out by the back three of Claire Brown, Rachael Spencer and in a new position for this week, EJ Mullis. Green cards were handed out to a player on each team for sloppy stick tackles, no doubt brought on by frustration rather than intent.

As the 70 minutes were up, the final whistle blew for a 0-0 draw. Caradon were disappointed they could not take their short corner chances, given so many, and went home with just the one point instead of three. However, the passing between players not only across the field but gaining the confidence to pass back and around was incredibly encouraging as the team start to connect. They have a tough game tomorrow against promotion pushing Duchy, who visit Lux Park for a 12 noon push back.
