Match Report |
Caradon travelled to Penryn to face a strong Falmouth side in the semi final of the county cup and ran out as worthy winners.
Caradon looked relaxed from the outset an began the task of breaking down the resilient Falmouth midfield. Fleur Worden and Beth Harris were reading play excellently and their surging forward runs gave the front runners opportunities to take the lead, but the Falmouth keeper made some great saves to deny the deadlock from being broken. Heroics from the Caradon defensive line of Marcia Burgess, Sharon Jeffery, Julia Eldridge kept chances for the home team to penalty corners. Player of the match, keeper Helen Delbridge, made some diving saves and Amy Batty who guarded the far post with defiance stopped several near certain goals.
The second half started with both teams knowing the first goal would be crucial. Falmouth pressed hard and started to dominate play. Caradon struggled to stay composed on the ball and before long Falmouth took the lead from a well worked penalty corner.
This was just what Caradon needed and straight from the restart Caradon where now in control and surged forward at every chance. Wingers Abbi larigo and Lauren kelly were demanding the ball more, leaving more space for Worden and Harris to push forward. A driving run and straight ball from Worden found Clare Poad who’s glancing deflection somehow spun into the bottom corner to level the scores.
With 5 minutes remaining, Falmouth were rattled and Caradon won another penalty corner. It was now or never for the underdogs and an accurate injection from Harris to a stick stop from Eldridge only left Bizzie Dinnis to drag flick into the bottom corner which she did expertly.
Caradon saw out the last remaining minutes and now look forward to county finals day on the 8th April where they will face Bodmin.
