Match Report

Caradon faced a hard game this week against top of the table Penzance, in a match traditionally high tempo and tempered. The weather on Saturday afternoon seemed to reflect this with a sunny start which transcended into dark and cold conditions.

The home side knew they had to step up the defence this week, with regular members back in the squad and the option of a defensive sub, they did well to keep out the early visiting attacks. For the first 15 minutes Caradon put up a strong wall, joint players of the match Rach Spencer and goalie Bekki Eddy particularly blocking strong and confidently. But Penzance’s dominance on the league reflected in their play and they quickly went 2-0 up with well worked and quick goals in succession. Frustrating for Caradon and they had a considerable amount of play before these goals, however finishing has not a strong point for the home side.

With more than 4 chances with short corners in the game, opportunities and simple shots were missed as the pressure was felt. Another quick counter attack saw an unmarked Penzance forward strike home a third. Hope was raised for Caradon just before half time when a goal mouth scramble after a short corner looked like a goal with Caradon celebrating, only for the umpire to decide the ball had not carried far enough across the line.

The home side were keen to come out fighting after the break and once again showed confident switching play around the back between wings and pushed forward for that goal they felt they deserved. Tempers started rising, with players questioning umpiring descisions, negativity between the Penzance players and Marcia Burgess picking up a green, control from both teams was lost for a period in the second half.

As the heavens opened, Penzance added a fourth with a well worked short corner, topping off a scrappy afternoon with a fifth some 10 minutes from the end.

Once again Caradon showed great grit and determination but the problem seems to be finishing goals and fresh ideas in short corner set ups. The score didn’t reflect their strong play and this is the frustrating theme for their season so far in Trelawney One. They play Truro at home tomorrow, in a must win game against the team two points above them.
