Match Report

Caradon welcomed Exeter University  to Lux Park and battled for a well deserved point in monsoon weather!

Exeter started fast, and Caradon were struggling to contain the students. The home teams’ defence were working well as a unit, goalkeeper Helen Delbridge pulling off some fine saves and Amy Batty clearing off the line not once but twice. Pressure soon paid off and the students were a worthy 2-0 up at half time.

The half time talk was positive and Caradon seemed almost more relaxed as the match resumed. Phases off play were creating goalmouth chances and it was after good work by Laura Hill that Lauren Kelly pounced on a loose ball to sound the backboard. Exeter were stunned and as player of the match, Julia Eldridge pushed further up the pitch the momentum had swung towards the home team.

Scores were levelled with five minutes to play when first team debutant Sadie Mullis fed the ball to winger Joely Bytheway. A determined run into the circle and a perfect pull back left captain, Clare Poad to force the ball over the line.

In the final moments of the match Caradon could have grabbed a winner, but a draw was probably a fair result.

Caradons’ team spirit and pure grit and determination earned them this point and they will do well to take it onto the next game, away to Tiverton, when they will be missing several key players.
