Match Report | Caradon began their league campaign against Plymouth Marjons and although they came away with no points, were pleased with the hockey that they played and the knowledge that they have improved from this fixture last year when beaten convincingly 4-1. Due to the increased member numbers at the club, the first team squad was able to travel with 13 and this allowed rolling substitutions to work with good effect. The midfield line looked fresh and with Beth Harris playing a new role in the middle of the pitch, the team grew with confidence as the game went on. Fleur Worden playing in defence, played with typical bravery and looked extremely comfortable in her new role. Chances were created but the backboard could not be found, and the harder the forwards tried to break the deadlock the more distant the goal looked. It was Marjons who led at half time 1-0, a soft goal to concede and this only spurred the Cornish team on, who in the second half were clearly the better team and held most of the possession. A well executed short corner gave the home team a very flattering 2-0 lead but Caradon maintained the pressure, knowing they must surely convert one of their chances soon. It was player of the match Joely Bytheway, playing her league debut for the squad, to score what will surely be a goal of the season contender. A determined run from the half way line and calm finish past the bemused keeper left Caradon piling on the pressure for the equaliser. The final whistle came and Caradon were left ruing missed chances but were happy with their performance, especially in the second half. |
